I was laying in my dorm room bed in Athens, Georgia, and my mind was racing. My parents had helped me move in earlier that day, and it was my first night on campus at UGA. As I stared up at all of my rad posters and signs on my wall, I began to think about what the future held for me in this magical environment of higher education. In the next few weeks I would be networking, meeting new people, going to my first classes, and experiencing all of what Athens has to offer. But beyond that, the next few years would shape me into the person I've always wanted to be, and lay the foundation for the rest of my entire life. A few years ago I never would have imagined myself going to school in Georgia, but for some strange reason it worked out and I couldn't be happier. Go Dawgs!
With daunting amounts of change and adjustment ahead of me, I knew I had to keep one thing close to heart: where I came from. Although it seemed like a drag, I will never forget the countless hours I spent studying and working in the IB Program, and I will rest assured know that I am prepared for whatever rigor I will face in the future. I will never forget the teachers I've learned from, or the life-long friendships I've made while cooped up in the classrooms of that old school that I came to know and love. I certainly wont forget the countless hours I spent grinding and sweating in that stadium alongside my teammates. Perhaps what I will remember the most is the laughter I shared in those places, and learning how to smile when things don't seem to be going your way. Although it may not be so glorious, Millbrook High School has molded me into the person I am today, and although I am now a Georgia Bulldog, I will always be a Millbrook Wildcat at heart.
Cool perspective! I never thought to write as if I was my future self but I like the way this turned out. I think it's cool that you say Millbrook, although old and gross, has molded you. It's so very true and despite disliking it during the time I was here, I think I might just miss it. This is really well written, good luck at UGA!
ReplyDeleteThis blog post was almost as rad as the posters you put in your dorm. I think it was cool that you used a perspective that involved talking about your present self in past tense. I also think it is important to remember your roots and how your earlier life helped to shape your later one. Hopefully we'll meet again later in our lives and we can reconnect man.
ReplyDeleteCool blog, I really liked how you wrote about Millbrook in a real way. It wasn't always glorious, amazing, or even clean, but it was home and it was the place where we grew up and made great memories! It has been a pleasure to go through the journey with you man, and I know you will be successful in Georgia and beyond.
ReplyDeleteReading your blog gets me so excited for the future. Thinking about move in day next year and reflecting on how we became the people we are today. We have shared our greatest memories together from 5th grade till now and i know those memories will never fade. I know i'll be visiting you all the time down in athens just like you know my door is always open to you in columbia. Go gamecocks!
ReplyDeleteWow, Kyle! While everyone has been looking back at the past, you're imagining the future. This was an amazing post to read and really warmed my heart (: I just want to thank you for all the smiles and laughter these past few years. Even in my high-stress times, I could always count on you and Jordan to make me ten times lighter with laughter! You've been a wonderful friend and I'll certainly never forget you. I know you're going to have the time of your life at UGA and someday make lots and lots of money just like Pablo Escobar :P I'll be watching and cheering you on the whole way there! Love you, Kyle!
ReplyDeleteI like how you talked about the laughter you shared while cooped up in the classrooms. I think this describes high school perfectly. It's not always fun and sometimes its miserable but it's the small things like laughter that really count. Whenever you're going through a hard time you have your classmates to talk to and we're like one big family. Hopefully we can share some laughs in the future buddy <3
